In that spirit, we formed Barkada Worldwide to help cultivate, promote and explore the future sounds and styles of the Philippines and beyond. We’ll be bringing you new music, events, and insight into emerging artists, musicians , and modern styles from around the globe.
Mark Herlihy has been a prominent tastemaker and curator for over 25 years. He founded the now legendary Future Primitive Sound collective, a highly influential event production company, record label, and art collective.
Future Primitive Sound productions, such as the 45 Session (which gave rise to DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist’s: Brainfreeze CD and tour), and the original recordings for the Live At The Future Primitive CD series, were pivotal in launching the early careers of artists such as Z Trip, Cut Chemist, Doze Green, Shortkut, and Romanowski to name just a few.
The SoundSessions were immortalized in the award winning internationally distributed documentary Scratch by director Doug Pray on Palm Pictures (2001)
Most recently, Mark was part of the team that developed and created the Undiscovered SF Night Market in San Francisco. A seasonal event that celebrates Filipino culture, drawing thousands of people to the SF SOMA Pilipinas District in the summertime. As the music curator for the first 2 seasons he brought the likes of DJ Q Bert, Lyrics Born, Miles Medina, and Ruby Ibarra to the stage and organized the first Manila Rising event, which featured B.P. Valenzuela, Crwn, LUSTBASS and RHXANDERS performing in the USA for the first time.
On his off time, Mark is an avid practitioner and instructor of the Filipino Martial art: Kalis Ilustrisimo. He’s a passionate cook, traveller and lifelong San Franciscan and is always seeking out and cultivating the next big thing…
